Can you get an Egg into a Bottle?

Is it really possible to get an egg into a bottle? It is, and here is how you do it.

  1. Drop three lit matches into a glass bottle that has a narrow neck (a 600 mL bottle works well.)
  2. Quickly put a peeled, hard-boiled egg on the mouth of the bottle.

The egg should squeeze it's way through the mouth of the bottle and get inside it.

Vicious Volcanoes

A volcano is a mountain that has a giant hole in the top. There is a tunnel going from the hole to the centre of the Earth. Whenever a volcano erupts some magma escapes from the Earth and bursts out the hole.

Swimming Seahorses

Facts:

Seahorses eat brine shrimp, plankton and some small fish.
Male seahorses give birth to the babies.
There are over 32 species of seahorse.
They prefer to live in sheltered areas such as coral reefs and sea grass beds.
When they are in an unusual area they turn bright colours.

Jiggling Jelly

Ingredients:

Packet of jelly
Measuring Jug
Boiling Water

What to Do:

1. Empty jelly crystals into a measuring jug.
2. Add boiling water to make a total volume of 500ml.
3. Stir until the jelly crystals are completely dissolved.
4. Pour into a mould and refrigerateuntil set.
5. Store in a cool dry place.
6. Refrigerate under 4 degrees Celsius

Perfect Pancakes

Ingredients:

1 cup self-raising flour
1 cup milk
1 egg

What to do:

1. Pre-heat a large non-stick frying pan.
2. Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix until combined.
3. Lightly grese the pan with butter or cooking spray.
4. Cook large spoonfulls of batter until bubbles burst on top and the edges start to go dry.
5. Turn and cook other side until golden.Now you know how to make pancakes.

Playful Play Dough

Ingredients:

½ a cup of salt
1 cup of plain flour
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of oil
food colouring

What to do:

Mix all the ingredients together in a medium sized saucepan.
Stir it while over heat until the dough is pliable.
Allow it to cool and store it in a well sealed plastic bag or a container.

Make Your Own Kazoo

What You Need:

· Cardboard tubes (from toilet rolls, plastic or foil wrap or from paper towels)
· Waxed paper
· Scissors
· Rubber band
· Ruler
· Textas or Pencils

What to do:

1. Decorate your tube with textas or pencils if you wish.
2. Cut a 5 inch square out of the waxed paper.
3. Place the square of waxed paper on one end of tube and secure with the rubbers band.
4. To play your kazoo, gently hum into the open end of it.

Wind Power

Wind can be used as a way to get energy. Have you ever seen a windmill? When the blades rotate it creates energy by using a generator inside the windmill.
You can make your own windmill and take it outside on a windy day and it will turn round.
Here are the instructions to build one.

Materials:

  • The template below
  • Scissors
  • A thumbtack or a split pin
  • A straw
  • Sticky tape

Instructions

  1. Cut out the template
  2. Decorate it
  3. From the corners of the square, cut until you reach the lines
  4. At every dot, fold it into the middle
  5. Sticky tape them there
  6. Poke a hole big enough to put your thumbtack or split pin in
  7. Put your thumbtack or split pin in. Make sure that paper is not touching the straw
  8. Now you're finished!

Make Mine Slime

You can make your own cornflour slime to learn about fluids and viscosity

To do this experiment you will need:
cornflour
food colouring
a small mixing bowl
water

What to do:
Pour some cornflour into a mixing bowl.
Stir in small bits of water until the cornflour has become a very thick paste.
To make the slime the colour of your choice, roughly stir about five drops of food colouring into the mixture.
Stir your slime REALLY slowly. This shouldn't be hard to do.
Stir your slime REALLY fast. This should be almost impossible.
Now punch your slime REALLY hard and fast. It should feel like you're punching a solid.


What's happening:
Anything that flows is called a fluid. This means that both gases and liquids are fluids.
Fluids like water which flow easily are said to have low viscosity, whereas fluids like cold honey which do not flow so easily are said to have a high viscosity.
Cornflour slime is a special type of fluid that doesn't follow the usual rules of fluid behaviour. When a pressure is applied to slime, its viscosity increases and the cornflour slime becomes thicker.

Invisible Ink

My list of Invisible Ink:


Cola drink (diluted)
Honey (diluted)
Lemon, apple or orange juice
Milk
Onion juice
Soap water
Sugar solution
Vinegar

Some inks are developed by heat.

You could use things that give out heat like a hair-drier or a heater. You could even use an oven without the flame. Just as long as it gives out heat.


My Prediction:

I predict that the writing will come out brown and you will be able to see it clearly.

What Happened:


We put it in the oven for about two and a half minutes and these were the results. The vinegar didn't appear, you can just see the tea, the sugar water and the coke, but the honey was seen clearly.

Create Your Own Moon Crater

Materials:

A plate
Flour
Four different sized rocks
Sand (maybe)

What to do:
Tip the flour into the plate and then order your rocks from biggest to smallest.
From about a metre high, drop the first rock then lift it carefully out of the flour.
Drop the other rocks from different heights and see what the difference is. Try it in sand as well.

My Prediction:
I predict that the biggest rock will make the biggest hole and the smallest rock will make the smallest hole.

Expanding Toothpicks

Materials:
5 Toothpicks
Eyedropper
Small plate

Water

Time Required:
5 minutes

What to do:
Snap all 5 toothpicks so they are bent, but not completely in two parts - they need to be still connected.
Arrange the bent toothpicks in the centre without letting the ends touch.
Using the eyedropper add 5 drops of water to the centre of the toothpicks. Make sure the drops of water touch the bent corners of all toothpicks.
Watch the toothpicks. If necessary add a couple more drops of water.

What’s Happening?
The broken wood of the toothpicks absorbs the water they are sitting in. As the water is drawn into the toothpick (by capillary action) the wood expands. The expanding wood on the inside of the break pushes against itself which makes the toothpick straighten out. As the toothpicks push out they form the star shape.

Rocket Tea Bags

Materials:
1 tea bag
Matches
Adult Supervision

Let’s do it:
1. Remove the string and tag from the tea bag.
2. Undo and remove the staple and then empty out the leaves.
3. Make the tea bag material into more of a tube by putting your finger into it. Careful not to tear the material!
4. Stand the tube vertically on a flat dry surface, open end facing upwards.
5. Ignite the rocket by lighting the top end of the tea bag tube and stand back!

I predict that the tea bag will rise up because the air inside the tea bag is warm which is caused by the fire and the air on the outside is cold. The warm air rises and lifts the tea bag like a hot air balloon.

What happened was we launched two rockets and the tea bags rose up because the air inside the tea bags was warm because of the fire and the air on the outside is cold. The warm air rises and lifts the tea bag like a hot air balloon.

Dancing Popcorn

Materials:
• Water
• Plastic cup
• Popcorn
• 1 Teaspoon
• 1 Tablespoon
• Sodium Bicarbonate
• Vinegar


What to do:
1. Fill the plastic cup with water until it is ¾ full.
2. Measure half a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate.
3. Add the sodium bicarbonate to the water and stir until it has dissolved.
4. Add 4 kernels of popcorn to the cup.
5. Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the cup.
6. Watch closely for at least 2 minutes.

I predict that the kernels will sink but bubbles will be created because of the vinegar and the sodium bicarbonate. The bubbles attach themselves to the kernels and they will float up. Then the bubbles pop and the kernels sink, then they rise, then they sink.

What actually happened was the kernels sink at first but the bubbles were created because of the vinegar and the sodium bicarbonate, then the kernels went up and down.

Wednesday 26th of March 2008 (Eggs)

My group have named our egg Bob. So far we have had an Egg Gymnastics, a walk around the courtyard, a bath, a drive around the classroom and a ballet lesson. When we did the Egg Gymnastics my group got a tick for not being too rough with our Egg. I took Bob for a walk in the courtyard in his bed.

It was bath time so J.B gave Bob a wash. We had to sing a lullaby so I made one up.


Rock a by egg, in the bath tub
Give him a wash, give him a scrub
When the bath breaks, the water will leak
The egg is scared, so it doesn’t speak
Its lips tremble, and it starts to cry
Pick it up, and sing a lullaby


J.H took Bob for a ride in the car but he didn’t strap him in! When it was time for ballet my group elected R.E and J.B. E.W did the best in the ballet lessons because she did it a different way.

Later we gave Bob a swimming lesson.

Egg Kids

From the 26th of March 2008, my group will take on the challenge of looking after an egg. My group (H.G, R.E, J.B, J.H, Z.K and I) will bring in a blown egg, name it and decorate it however we like. We will take it where ever we go and will do this from Wednesday – Friday. The conditions of the egg will be in a take-away box filled with shredded newspaper.

Soak some Potatoes

Slice a small potato lengthwise into several pieces that each have two flat sides. Place some of the pieces in one dish and the rest in another. Fill both dishes with water. Add two tablespoons of salt to one of the dishes, and label it "salt water." Let the potatoes soak for 15 minutes.Compare the potatoes. Is there a difference in firmness? Why?

I predict that the salt water will make the potato softer and the normal water won't make a difference

The normal water did nothing and the salt water made the potatoes go softer.

Invisible Writing

Materials:

Piece of Paper
Small Twig OR Cotton Bud
Milk
OR
Orange Juice
Apple Juice
Onion Juice
Soft dink
Cordial
Water
Heater OR Oven
Adult Helper

What You Have To Do:

Get a piece of paper and a twig or a cotton bud.
Put the end of the cotton bud or the twig in to a cup of milk or juice etc.
Draw or write something on it with the twig or the cotton bud and then put it in the sun or over an oven. (Adult help with the stove.)

What I Think Will Happen:

I think that when you put the piece of paper over the oven or in the sun, the liquid heats up and leaves marks on the paper before it evaporates.
