An Unforgettable Hike

One night there was a family going on a hike. There were two children a mother and a father. They were climbing up a hill with all the requirements that they needed. They stopped for a rest and sat on some rocks. They continued up the hill until they reached the top. They set up the tent and the sleeping bags. They put all the food into a box outside. The parents went to sleep but the children had difficulty.

They heard something outside. They poked their head out of the tent and looked around. They saw that the box that contained the food was empty. They looked around but then they heard a growl. They got back into the tent and told their parents about the food and the growl. They didn’t believe them until they heard the same growl themselves. The beast was right outside the tent. They could see it punching the side of it.

The father ran outside the tent and turned right. He told the rest of the family to go left. They all ran down the hill closely followed by the father with the beast behind him. They made it to the bottom of the hill and drove off in their car but the beast was holding onto the back of it. They were able to shake it off and get home safely but they would never forget that night.

Can you get an Egg into a Bottle?

Is it really possible to get an egg into a bottle? It is, and here is how you do it.

1. Drop three lit matches into a glass bottle that has a narrow neck (a 600 mL bottle works well.)
2. Quickly put a peeled, hard-boiled egg on the mouth of the bottle.

The egg should squeeze it's way through the mouth of the bottle and get inside it.

Vicious Volcanoes

A volcano is a mountain that has a giant hole in the top. There is a tunnel going from the hole to the centre of the Earth. Whenever a volcano erupts some magma escapes from the Earth and bursts out the hole.

Swimming Seahorses

Facts:

Seahorses eat brine shrimp, plankton and some small fish.

Male seahorses give birth to the babies.

There are over 32 species of seahorse.

They prefer to live in sheltered areas such as coral reefs and sea grass beds.

When they are in an unusual area they turn bright colours.

Jiggling Jelly

Ingredients:

Packet of jelly
Measuring Jug
Boiling Water

What to Do:

1. Empty jelly crystals into a measuring jug.
2. Add boiling water to make a total volume of 500ml.
3. Stir until the jelly crystals are completely dissolved.
4. Pour into a mould and refrigerateuntil set.
5. Store in a cool dry place.
6. Refrigerate under 4 degrees Celsius

Perfect Pancakes

Ingredients:

1 cup self-raising flour
1 cup milk
1 egg

What to do:

1. Pre-heat a large non-stick frying pan.
2. Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix until combined.
3. Lightly grese the pan with butter or cooking spray.
4. Cook large spoonfulls of batter until bubbles burst on top and the edges start to go dry.
5. Turn and cook other side until golden.Now you know how to make pancakes.

Playful Play Dough

Ingredients:

½ a cup of salt
1 cup of plain flour
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of oil
food colouring

What to do:

Mix all the ingredients together in a medium sized saucepan.
Stir it while over heat until the dough is pliable.
Allow it to cool and store it in a well sealed plastic bag or a container.

Make Your Own Kazoo

What You Need:

· Cardboard tubes (from toilet rolls, plastic or foil wrap or from paper towels)
· Waxed paper
· Scissors
· Rubber band
· Ruler
· Textas or Pencils

What to do:

1. Decorate your tube with textas or pencils if you wish.
2. Cut a 5 inch square out of the waxed paper.
3. Place the square of waxed paper on one end of tube and secure with the rubbers band.
4. To play your kazoo, gently hum into the open end of it.

Wind Power

Wind can be used as a way to get energy. Have you ever seen a windmill? When the blades rotate it creates energy by using a generator inside the windmill.
You can make your own windmill and take it outside on a windy day and it will turn round.
Here are the instructions to build one.

Materials:

• The template below
• Scissors
• A thumbtack or a split pin
• A straw
• Sticky tape

Instructions

1. Cut out the template
2. Decorate it
3. From the corners of the square, cut until you reach the lines
4. At every dot, fold it into the middle
5. Sticky tape them there
6. Poke a hole big enough to put your thumbtack or split pin in
7. Put your thumbtack or split pin in. Make sure that paper is not touching the straw
8. Now you're finished!
   

Homework Term 4 Week 3

For technology you can invent a device for quickly sorting into separate piles, a mixture of nuts and bolts.
Write down your first ideas.
Then write a plan.
Then write an evaluation of the device you invented.

My device is a small table about the size of a monitor. You put the bowl of nuts and bolts under the table. Next, you press a button on the side of the table which makes the table drop spikes out of the bottom of it. (The spikes are still attached to the bottom of the table.) Little discs open up at the ends of the spikes and then they lift upwards. You should be able to see some nuts on the ends of the spikes.

For THRASS, write ten words with "c" is for cat then write a descriptive sentence with each of the words.

Make Mine Slime

You can make your own cornflour slime to learn about fluids and viscosity

To do this experiment you will need:
cornflour
food colouring
a small mixing bowl
water

What to do:
Pour some cornflour into a mixing bowl.
Stir in small bits of water until the cornflour has become a very thick paste.
To make the slime the colour of your choice, roughly stir about five drops of food colouring into the mixture.
Stir your slime REALLY slowly. This shouldn't be hard to do.
Stir your slime REALLY fast. This should be almost impossible.
Now punch your slime REALLY hard and fast. It should feel like you're punching a solid.


What's happening:
Anything that flows is called a fluid. This means that both gases and liquids are fluids.
Fluids like water which flow easily are said to have low viscosity, whereas fluids like cold honey which do not flow so easily are said to have a high viscosity.
Cornflour slime is a special type of fluid that doesn't follow the usual rules of fluid behaviour. When a pressure is applied to slime, its viscosity increases and the cornflour slime becomes thicker.

Spelunking

One day I went caving with my friend Bob. We were there to observe the stalactites and stalagmites. We went to the shed and borrowed some equipment like torches, hard hats, cameras and some food. We walked in through the main entrance and as we walked further into the cave the light around us dimmed until we used our torches to light our way.

We found a giant group of stalactites dangling from the ceiling of the cave. We took some pictures and continued walking until we found a giant stalagmite about fifteen metres tall. I walked up to it but I fell down a hole and pulled Bob in with me. We fell down about five metres and then landed on a smooth but rocky surface.

We stood under it and shouted through it to see if there was anybody nearby and luckily there was. There was a family that was walking through the cave. There was a mother, a father and a seven year old son. The boy heard us shouting so he walked over to the hole and looked into it. He saw us and went back to his parents. They called the help service and we were out in no time.

In the captains cabin I found a parrot searching through the draws and saying "now where did those crackers go?", the captain choking on a fork, a picture of the biggest cannon on the ship and Movies trying to steal some treasure.

My Winter Project

For my winter project I have created two star wars LEGO battle scenes. One scene takes place in space and the other takes place in a forest. The LEGO pieces are displayed in two large boxes that I have painted and decorated. I have spent 11 hours and 30 minutes on my project which includes planning the scenes, putting the LEGO into place and decorating the boxes. First I got the boxes and started on the one that takes place in outer space. I didn't have any black paint so I mixed some other colours together. I started painting the inside of the box and did the outside another time. When I had finished I put on some decorations like:

I started doing the second scene but once again I didn't have the right colour paint that I wanted. I mixed some other colours together and I got dark green so I added some pale yellow and then I got light green. I painted the ground, the sides and then I spray painted the outside with brown. I next painted the trees and that was the end of the decorating. I put the ships for the space scene in place using toothpicks and black cotton. I made holes in the top and threaded the string through them. Then I tied them onto the toothpicks and left them there. I made a few extra objects out of LEGO that I didn't already have. Then all I had to do after that was to stick the characters for the land battle into the box using blue tack. Then I got on the computer and made this document.
